North Texas hired Grant McCasland to take over its men's basketball program on Monday.

UNT athletic director Wren Baker worked quickly and kept the process quiet after firing Tony Benford.

The Nashville Tennessean reported today that Tennessee State coach Dana Ford also interviewed for the position.

Ford led Tennessee State to a 17-13 finish this season, his third at the school. Tennessee State went 5-26 in his first season at the school before jumping to 20-11 last year.

Tennessee State advanced to the CollegeInsider.com postseason tournament in Ford's second season when he was named the Ohio Valley Coach of the Year.

McCasland guided Arkansas State to a 20-12 finish in his lone season at the school. He also has deep Texas ties.

McCasland is from Irving and was the head coach at Midland College, Midwestern State and was also briefly at Abilene Christian before taking a job as an assistant at Baylor.
